Entre 25cm a Piranha - Caju e a até 50cm a Piranha - preta são mundialmente famosas por causa das lendas criadas a respeito da sua ferocidade. São encontradas apenas no continente sul-americano. Possui maxila superior e inferior com uma única série de dentes inseridos lado a lado, formando uma lâmina cortante. A maioria das espécies consome peixes. A participação das piranhas na pesca comercial é baixa. No mercado de Manaus esse grupo representou menos de 1% da produção total, sendo formado por cinco espécies. A piranha-caju é a mais conhecida.

They have an upper and lower jaw that have a single file line of teeth which form a sharp blade. The largest of the species consumes other fish. The participation of this fish in the comercial market is low. Of the market in Manaus, they represent less than 1% of total production, consisting of 5 species. The piranha-caju is the most well known.
